‘Smoking gun’ email shows Veterans Affairs office gaming scheduling system

A “smoking gun” has surfaced in the scandal currently rocking the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In an email obtained by CBS News, a worker at the VA Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyo., instructs others on how to game the scheduling system so as not to upset the front office.

Jennifer Janisch reports:

The email, written by Telehealth Coordinator David Newman, a registered nurse, describes how patients at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center are always listed getting appointments within a 14-day window, no matter when the appointment was first requested, and no matter how long the patient actually waited.

The memo admitted, “Yes, this is gaming the system a bit…” because “when we exceed the 14 day measure, the front office gets very upset, which doesn’t help us.”

The employee further instructs staff on how to “get off the bad boys list” by “cancelling the visit (by clinic) and then rescheduling it with a desired date within that 14 day window.”

Just yesterday, Congress issued a subpoena to VA Secretary Eric Shinseki seeking emails and documents related to delays of medical care for veterans at a Phoenix, Ariz., VA hospital. One retired doctor has alleged that as many as 40 veterans may have died while waiting for treatment.

Today on CNN, Sen. John McCain said that if the scandal “is what it appears to be, this isn’t just resignations, this is violations of the law, people should go to jail.”

Gaming the system at the expense of veterans’ health and even lives?

Fellow veterans,
The next time the enemy is firing at you, just "game the system" and ask them to shoot 14 days from now.

#WhereAreTheJobs? Why, Nancy, they’re on the Napa Valley Wine Train

Earlier today, U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted a video claiming that the time congressional Republicans spent repealing Obamacare has cost the American taxpayers $50 million. And … wait for it … the GOP’s to blame for the country’s high unemployment rate.

Conservatives wasted no time hijacking the Insatiable Beast’s hashtag: #WhereAreTheJobs.

@NancyPelosi #WhereAreTheJobs from someone who says the solution to unemployment situation is more food stamps. Thanks for CA's downfall.

Hey, Nancy. You and Barack Obama and the rest of your merry band of fools had two GOP-free years to focus on jobs while you were dithering on other matters so grave to the economy, you know, like building turtle tunnels and passing Obamacare. As usual, Pelosi directed her question at the wrong political party.

#WhereAreTheJobs They're sure not in the 2,400 pages of the ObamaCare fiasco @TheDemocrats Good thing you spent time ramming that through.

Maybe Pelosi should visit her posh winery to find some jobs — probably the only jobs the Outsourcer-in-Chief hasn’t sent overseas.

Puppy Trapped in a Car For a Month Defies All Odds

For weeks, this puppy lived without food or water. Miraculously, she survived conditions that would have killed even a human being.

The 12 week-old dog was found locked in an abandoned car that was parked in an impound lot. Her rescuers believe that she was there for nearly a month.

This little girl was found in an abandoned car parked in an impound lot.

The 12 week-old puppy was there for at least a month.

She had no food or water; the only things found in the car were McDonalds wrappers and cigars.

It’s a miracle she survived her ordeal… and she is recovering just fine.

Her rescuers have named her “Kia.”

Soon, she’ll find a forever home where no one will forget about her.

She was immediately taken to a vet, given a name (Kia) and is receiving treatment until she finds her forever home. David Blaine has nothing on this puppy.

These 10 Animals Have Superpowers…No Really. Wait Until You See #8.

Have you ever wanted to have superpowers? (I mean who hasn’t, right?) I could totally use some super strength. Then, I wouldn’t need to beg my friends to come over and help me move furniture.

Well these 10 animals actually have superpowers. They give me hope that one day I can achieve my superpower dreams without a hefty dose of gamma radiation. Just wait until you see what can do. (). So cool.

1.) The Bird Flea.

Fleas are some of the best animal jumpers in the world. Normally, they can jump 200 times their body length, and 150 times their body height.

The bird flea is the best jumper among fleas. It can jump about 220 times its size. That would be the be the equivalent of a human jumping 1,300 feet over an 820 foot tall building.

2.) Sea Cucumber.

Sea cucumbers are harmless creatures, but they have an awesome defense mechanism. Because of their unique biology, they can almost instantly change their body from a solid to a liquid then back to a solid.

3.) Shocking Pink Dragon Millipede.

When its hot pink color doesn’t work to ward off predators, the dragon millipede can shoot clouds of hydrogen cyanide from its mouth. Which in case you’re wondering, it is highly toxic. Yeah, you don’t want to mess with this thing.

The mantis shrimp throws one heck of punch. It can deliver a blow with the force more than 1,000 times its own body weight. That’s as fast as a bullet.

Mantis shrimp also have some of the most sophisticated eyes in the world. That makes them even more deadly hunters.

5.) Hairy Frog.

The hairy frog, named so because it looks hairy, has a pretty amazing defense system built in. When it’s being threatened, this frog can actually grow claws.

It does this by breaking its toe bones and pushing the sharp end through the skin. Kind of like Wolverine from X-Men.

6.) The Mimic Octopus.

Most octopi are able to change their pigmentation to blend in with their surroundings, but the mimic octopus takes it a step further.

It is able to impersonate other sea animals for either hunting or escaping. Scientists who study the mimic octopus have observed it pretending to be over a dozen different species.

7.) Hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds are awesome, as we already know. They are the smallest birds on the planet, and are also the fastest.

On average, a hummingbird can fly 385 times its own body length per second. They’re also the only birds that can hover stationary in the air.

8.) Pistol Shrimp.

The pistol shrimp has two claws, one tiny, and the other abnormally large. Can you guess which one is a deadly weapon?

Pistol shrimp can snap their claw so fast that it creates what are known as cavitation bubbles that are nearly as hot as the sun. When the bubbles burst they create miniature sonic booms of up to 218 decibels. This is very helpful for hunting fish.

9.) Turritopsis Nutricula.

This tiny jellyfish is essentially immortal. It’s the only animal on Earth that can reverse its life cycle when it becomes sick or old. So far this process seem like it can be repeated an infinite number of times.

10.) Tardigrade.

Tardigrades are tiny organisms that are among the most hearty on Earth. They can survive temperatures ranging from -200 degrees Celsius to 150 degrees Celsius. Food is also not complete necessary for Tardigrades.

They can go into stasis and survive without food or water for at least 100 years. It’s even possible for Tardigrades to survive the vacuum of space.

Check out this awesome video for even more info about these super animals.

Lake Tahoe Herbs and Travel

I recently attended a class at the local Community Colledge.  LTCC has an amazing selection  of ongoing edu classes they call it Community Connect.  They have classes for residents of all ages.  Kids classes like rock climbing and guitar classes, as well as adult class like the herb class I took to salsa dancing.  So the class I took was healing herbs of the Sierra’s with Gina Woods.

This class was amazing I had no idea how many healing herbs and plants were growing in this area.  I have always thought of this area as being pretty barren.   To my surprise, we are filled with an amazing array of things that be harvested most of the year.   The first part of the class as in the college where she showed us a slide show and talked about the seasonal use of tinctures, tea’s and salves.  Then we went out just up the road by the Truckee river and she pointed out tons of different plants that I had now idea were so healing.  We could barley walk more than 2 feet without an other discovery.

After we gathered some different plants we headed back to the college.  She explained the different methods for extracting and using the plants we collected.  There are several methods for each plant.  Learning these methods as well as the different delivery process in the body was very enlightening.

Collecting these herbs is amazing and can be done in what is called the shoulder season.  The shoulder season is the less busy time of the year late April-June and than October to Christmas. Looking for a great place to stay in the area.   Lake Tahoe is of course filled with hotels and motels.  Off-season Lakeshore Lodge and Spa has some great deals and they are a South Lake Tahoe hotel located right on the water.  Here is a link to their website  www.Tahoelakeshorelodge.com

During opening statements at today&;s House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations hearing about the U.S. response to , Democrats on the committee already seem to have identified one of the culprits: Funding.

16. And this was in Essence magazine, not a red carpet, but Ava taught perhaps the most important lesson of all, as she accepted — nay, appreciated — her “flaws.”

“…to my Mom for making me wear braces to close the gap in my smile but I never wore the retainer so the gap became crazy crooked and now I like it.”
